Visually Optimizing your Facebook Page

Monday, December 5, 2011

Part of SEO is researching what people are going to search for, look at and click on. The second part of our job is converting the people that click on your links and get them to contact you, but what if your website isn't set up the way it should depending on eye tracking?

Facebook Page Eye-tracking

Google Results Page Eye-tracking

As you can see, Facebook and Google tracking results look very similar. What does this mean for your Facebook page or website? It means putting the most important bits of information in the upper left-corner of the page. (By association it also means being #1 and #2 in Search Engine results means more than being on the first page).

What are the most important things on your Facebook Page?

Your Profile Picture
If you're a business or entrepreneur, make sure your business Facebook page has a profile picture that isn't just a logo. Design it so the image says something, whether it's an offer or your phone number. If you're just showcasing your logo, you're not doing enough.

Your Banner Images
Check your page out and make sure your banner images (or spread) look nice together. You can even go so far as to design your Facebook page spread.

Your Top Posts
Make sure you're making full use of post display options. If you want to get people's attention, make sure you're posting links and stories that include images. Also, make sure you're updating on a regular basis, or your latest post date could be the first and last thing they ever see.

Your Featured Likes
People may not think of these too often, but according to eye-tracking research, it's actually an extremely important area of your Facebook page. Remember, it's not always what you know, but who you know.
